sand and wave

the day ended like a wave

brushing up against a distant shore

and, satisfied it could go no farther,

the sand sighed “I would ask for no more.”

thus they stayed in each other’s arms

until the tide pulled them apart,

not forever, just for now.

“I will miss the comfort of your embrace”

said the wave as it slipped away.

“And I will long for your next kiss” replied the sand

while the wind, touching both,

sang softly to the night.

Sleeping

there is a silence in the morning,

just before the sun rolls over and,

opening sleep-filled eyes,

warms the summer sky with its gaze.

today, that silence was delayed.

today, the sun overslept.

in their confusion, the birds did not sing

but stirred, blinking nervously from their perches.

you were dreaming

and i wondered how near i was to you.

lament

the sky had not considered

that the day might end,

so when the merlot sunset faded,

there was little time to prepare.

rain fell the next morning,

warm and musky,

like the sweat of lovers

collapsed in each other's arms

and drifting slowly off to sleep

as a lone and distant piper

plays laments to the wind.

never is never forever

never is never forever.

the distant sun burns day and night

indifferent to the neediness below.

'I will do what I do for as long as I do it',

he cried in a voice both defiant and plaintive.

the Muse paints, awakening the Poet too long asleep.

never is never forever.

waves nudge the sandy shore

and, as the wind explores the trees,

i run my fingers through your soft hair.

gulls circle above like lovers' lips

brushing against the urgency.

around and around.

a fire crackles in the evening

and the wine sips away

as musicians bare their souls to the stick-people

dancing, swaying, stomping out their passion

like there is no tomorrow.

they do this night after night

as we dream of gentle embraces,

the heat from our entwined bodies a surprise to you.

'I thought this would never happen again', you sighed.

'never is never forever', i replied.
