this is how i remember you:
waves crashing on a sandy shore
clouds racing madly overhead
the wind and rain stinging our faces
drowning out our voices
great trees bending, branches whipping
as you pace the beach
under an early autumn sky
clouds racing madly
water crashing.

youth and age
the difference between youth and age?
youth lives their dreams
while age relives theirs.

the edge of time
i stood at the edge of time and wondered;
if i crossed over, when would i return?
reflecting back, i saw a million images
along a line unbroken,
a million points of light
individual, alone, but connected.
each awaited my next move;
would i break the chain?
resolutely i crossed over, embracing my fate.
it seemed significant at the time
but, really, i had done it before
a million times or more.

nothing
nothing that we say or do
will change what we have said or done;
the past has no future,
the present, no past.
we move along the path,
dry leaves in the wind,
none of us knowing where the wind will take us
or when it will stop.

you are
you are the still-water pond
reflecting my smile.
you are the sunlight reflecting from my eyes.
you are the dream
reflecting in my mind.
you are laughter and tears,
wind and fire.
you are the one who holds me
when i am alone.

the rock
in the darkness of the storm
we held on to the calm,
the stillness that preceded it.
while waves crashed on the shore
and the wind whipped the pines,
we became the rock that weathered it all
and woke to the warmth of the new sun.

not because
you would find understanding
but not because i told you.
let understanding come to you in dreams,
as it came to me.
you would find forgiveness
but not because i asked you.
let forgiveness come to you in time,
as it came to me.
you would find peace
but not because i showed you.
let it come to you through forgiveness and understanding,
as it came to me.

the morning
i called the morning to me,
the night having served its purpose,
it moved reluctantly but eventually arrived.
and in the warm light
i saw my dream of you.
you smiled as a soft wind touched your cheek.
a hint of sweet perfume drifted to me
and you were gone.

floating dreams
when the skies are silent
and the winds and clouds are off
exploring other lands,
we sit quietly in the sun
our dreams and memories floating by
like so many leaves in a pond.
we are the water that holds them,
touches them all
and carries them away.
be still beside us
and we will fill your minds
with leaves and thunder.
as the pond's cool water caresses you,
we will give you our dreams,
and the skies will speak again.

clouds
i could not hear the clouds passing overhead,
but i remember the wind.
when the sun returned
i saw only a shadow of you,
your retreating thoughts already far away,
vanishing into another night.
there would be no stars tonight,
no moon to light my dreams;
just the silence of the clouds passing overhead
and the memory of a wind
that touched me and was gone.

inaction reaction
life careens and crashes around us
like cars in an icy fog.
the thunder in my head
is the pounding of my heart
as i watch the others escape.
i'm too scared, too uncertain to move.
i stand frozen, a photograph
in a broken frame
on the dresser where you knocked it over
when you left, angry and frustrated,
reminds me that all things can change.
eventually the fog will clear
and the prisoners, returning to their cells,
sneer at their captors.
they got what they wanted you growl,
scratching an itch,
as life careens and crashes around us like cars
while we drift off to sleep.

alone together
we stood alone together,
the crowd around us
surrounds us like trees,
like trees in a windstorm, all frantic motion
without going anywhere.
and we stand in their midst,
alone together,
thinking our private thoughts
with no thought of speaking.
even our screams are lost in the wind.

leaving
the music changed
but not our dreams.
we dreamt of the other side,
another time,
where the days of our life
were no longer marked differently.
we promised to save our songs
for that time.
