motion in motion

love is the gentle storm that swells the stream,

cutting a path of life through the dry earth,

setting motion in motion.

when i look into your eyes i see the wind

nudging a leaf from its place of solitude

to fall with quiet determination

into a warmth so complete

it cannot imagine where else it could be.

ten explorers

before the first light brushed the eastern sky,

my fingers, waking, touched

the smooth coolness of your skin

and ten windows opened into a new world

as if ten explorers set out with no expectations

but none the less found their destiny.

river of dreams

our closeness is no more a thing of chance

than a river, anxious to reach the next bend.

i see it in your smile when you rest in my arms.

and hear it in our whispering voices

when the light of another day quietly fades.

my arms become the water you drift in

as your eyes become my sky,

slowly coming in and out of focus

as sleep arrives to lay one dream upon another.

memories

my thoughts of you were like waves

lapping gently on some foreign shore

where they may have touched before

but, as the sun washed over me,

i lost my memory of when.

i saw a distant sailboat and wondered

where was it going? were you on it?

there were no clouds that day,

only the song of birds and fishing men

and the pounding of my heart.

Unforbidden Love

i played Adam to your Eve,

accepting the apple you offered.

at the crisp sound of my first bite

a hint of a smile crossed your face.

which original sin were you contemplating?

the morning sun rose to kiss a summer sky

as clouds, blushing pink, looked on

without regret

i leaned in to answer your lips' sweet request.

dancing

you reach deeper into the night than i,

your mind finding quiet ways

to amuse itself with my sleeping hands

as your gentle eyes

cover me like a soft blanket.

yet even as i sleep i dream we are dancing,

slow and close, our bellies barely brushing.

and each day i awaken to a greater understanding

of why the sun rises.

circles across the sky

if time were a place

i would meet you there.

I love you farther than my arms can reach,

my head resting

on your soft breast rising, falling,

your hand absently tracing

circles across the sky.

let my words kiss you then

and there.

saying goodbye

it was cloudy when you said ‘goodbye’

and i replied ‘until next time…'

i slept for awhile but the dreams persisted.

how many days until tomorrow?

i use to believe that the big dreams were the best.

now i know that the best dreams

were the ones we shared.

how many days until tomorrow?

sand and wave

the day ended like a wave

brushing up against a distant shore

and, satisfied it could go no farther,

the sand sighed “I would ask for no more.”

thus they stayed in each other’s arms

until the tide pulled them apart,

not forever, just for now.

“I will miss the comfort of your embrace”

said the wave as it slipped away.

“And I will long for your next kiss” replied the sand

while the wind, touching both,

sang softly to the night.

Sleeping

there is a silence in the morning,

just before the sun rolls over and,

opening sleep-filled eyes,

warms the summer sky with its gaze.

today, that silence was delayed.

today, the sun overslept.

in their confusion, the birds did not sing

but stirred, blinking nervously from their perches.

you were dreaming

and i wondered how near i was to you.

lament

the sky had not considered

that the day might end,

so when the merlot sunset faded,

there was little time to prepare.

rain fell the next morning,

warm and musky,

like the sweat of lovers

collapsed in each other's arms

and drifting slowly off to sleep

as a lone and distant piper

plays laments to the wind.

never is never forever

never is never forever.

the distant sun burns day and night

indifferent to the neediness below.

'I will do what I do for as long as I do it',

he cried in a voice both defiant and plaintive.

the Muse paints, awakening the Poet too long asleep.

never is never forever.

waves nudge the sandy shore

and, as the wind explores the trees,

i run my fingers through your soft hair.

gulls circle above like lovers' lips

brushing against the urgency.

around and around.

a fire crackles in the evening

and the wine sips away

as musicians bare their souls to the stick-people

dancing, swaying, stomping out their passion

like there is no tomorrow.

they do this night after night

as we dream of gentle embraces,

the heat from our entwined bodies a surprise to you.

'I thought this would never happen again', you sighed.

'never is never forever', i replied.

Color and Shadow

some roads are never long enough
but well traveled.
their relentless lines wander from place to place
while going nowhere.

you chose a more abstract path,
a different dream,
and followed its bright images
until the shadows, murmuring their sorrows,
sank into the darkness.

the night wind turned away
with a shuddering sigh
and the colors became silent.
